What is your perception of what a Bowls Coach does? The general response is one who teaches Beginners on how to bowl and how to carry out basic deliveries. If you subscribe to this belief you could not be more wrong. How many times have you heard someone say “I’ve been bowling for years and I don’t need any coaching”. It is very surprising therefore when we are running coaching sessions at clubs around the country the number of ‘experienced’ bowlers ask the coaches for help in sorting out some problem with deliveries or other things that are worrying them.
A trained member of the English Bowls Coaching Scheme has the knowledge and skills necessary to pick up on potential issues simply by observation. These can range from small items like a small turn of the wrist, arm straying across the body, incorrectly positioned feet. They can be small in detail but can be the difference between success and frustration.
Some of the areas of coaching available are.
1. Beginners Course taking a completely new bowler through a Comprehensive syllabus to get them started in the sport.
2. Delivery clinics with or without the use of video for all levels of bowler.
3. Head reading for pairs, triples or rinks using systems called freezing the head (play stopped between each shot with analysis and discussion of options) and the popular Phantom Four. Bowls are placed in the head by a phantom. These two specific exercises bond and help rinks to understand each other, they also prove to skips they do not have a monopoly on good ideas. It helps everybody on the rink to view the complete picture and also consider, what shot do we not want the opposition to play and how can we stop them?
